Punctuation Rules: A Simple Guide for Students of Classes 9 and 10
Punctuation marks are symbols that help us organise our writing and make its meaning clear. They tell the reader where to pause, stop, ask a question, or express strong feelings.Punctuation is like traffic signals in writing. Without punctuation, a sentence may become confusing or even change its meaning.
मराठीमध्ये:विरामचिन्हे ही लेखनातील महत्त्वाची चिन्हे आहेत. ती वाक्याचा अर्थ स्पष्ट करतात. कुठे थांबायचे, प्रश्न विचारायचा, आश्चर्य व्यक्त करायचे किंवा वाक्य पूर्ण झाले आहे हे विरामचिन्हांमुळे समजते.—
1. Full Stop (.)
Rule:A full stop is used at the end of a complete statement or declarative sentence.पूर्णविरामाचा वापर विधानात्मक वाक्याच्या शेवटी केला जातो
Examples:-
I live in Maharashtra.
She is a good student.
We play cricket every evening.
Remember:Do not use a full stop after a question or an exclamation.
2. Comma (,)
Rule 1: Use a comma to separate items in a list.सूचीतील शब्द किंवा वाक्याचे वेगवेगळे भाग वेगळे करण्यासाठी त्याचा उपयोग होतो
Example:- I bought apples, bananas, grapes and oranges.
Rule 2: Use a comma after introductory words or phrases.वाक्याचे वेगवेगळे भाग वेगळे करण्यासाठी त्याचा उपयोग होतो
Example:- However, he did not attend the meeting.- In the morning, we went for a walk.
Rule 3: Use commas to separate parts of a sentence when necessary.स्वल्पविरामाचा वापर वाक्यात थोडा विराम दर्शविण्यासाठी केला जातो.
Example:- If you work hard, you will succeed.
3. Question Mark (?)
Rule:Use a question mark at the end of a direct question.प्रश्नार्थक वाक्याच्या शेवटी प्रश्नचिन्ह वापरले जाते
Examples:- What is your name?
Where do you live?
Are you ready for the examination?
Remember:Do not use a question mark for an ordinary statement.
❌ I wonder where he lives?
✔ I wonder where he lives.
4. Exclamation Mark (!)
Rule:Use an exclamation mark to express strong feelings such as joy, surprise, pain, excitement or anger.आश्चर्य, आनंद, दुःख, राग किंवा तीव्र भावना व्यक्त करण्यासाठी उद्गारवाचक चिन्ह वापरले जाते
Examples:- What a beautiful day!-
Wow! That is amazing!
Alas! He is no more.
Tip:Do not overuse exclamation marks in formal writing.
5. Apostrophe (’)
The apostrophe has two important uses.
A. To show possession एखादी वस्तू कोणाच्या मालकीची आहे हे दाखवण्यासाठी अपोस्ट्रॉफीचा वापर केला जातो
Examples:- Rahul’s book
The teacher’s chair
The girls’ hostel
B. In contractions
Examples:- do not → don’t
cannot → can’t-
I am → I’m
it is → it’s
Important:Its shows possession, while it’s means it is or it has.- The dog is wagging its tail.- It’s a beautiful day.
6. Quotation Marks (“ ”)
Rule:Quotation marks are used to show the exact words spoken by someone. एखाद्या व्यक्तीचे नेमके शब्द किंवा संवाद दाखवण्यासाठी अवतरण चिन्हे वापरली जातात.
Examples:- The teacher said, “Work hard for success.”
Riya asked, “Can you help me?”
7. Colon (:)
Rule:A colon is often used before a list, explanation or example.सूची, स्पष्टीकरण किंवा उदाहरण देण्यापूर्वी द्विबिंदू वापरला जातो
Example:- Bring these things: a pen, a notebook and a ruler.
8. Semicolon (;)
Rule:A semicolon joins two closely related complete sentences. दोन जवळच्या अर्थाच्या स्वतंत्र वाक्यांना जोडण्यासाठी अर्धविरामाचा वापर केला जातो.
Example:- Rohan studied hard; he passed the examination with good marks.
Tip:For Classes 9 and 10, use semicolons carefully. A full stop is often a simpler choice.
9. Hyphen (-)
Rule:A hyphen joins two or more words that work together as one idea. दोन किंवा अधिक शब्द एकत्र जोडण्यासाठी हायफनचा वापर केला जातो.
Examples:- well-known writer- ten-year-old boy- part-time job
10. Dash (—)
Rule:A dash is used to show a sudden break, additional information or emphasis.वाक्यात अचानक बदल, थांबा किंवा विशेष माहिती दर्शविण्यासाठी डॅशचा वापर केला जातो.
Example:- I was about to leave — then the phone rang.मराठी स्पष्टीकरण:
11. Brackets ( )
Rule:Brackets are used to add extra information to a sentence.वाक्यात अतिरिक्त माहिती देण्यासाठी कंसाचा वापर केला जातो.
Example:- Sachin Tendulkar (a famous Indian cricketer) is admired by millions.

1. Missing full stop
❌ My brother is a doctor

2. Incorrect question mark
❌ He asked me where I lived?
✔ He asked me where I lived.
3. Missing comma in direct speech
❌ Mother said “Come here.”
✔ Mother said, “Come here.”
4. Confusing its and it’s
❌ The bird is feeding it’s young.
✔ The bird is feeding its young.
5. Overusing punctuation
❌ Wow!!! This is great!!!
✔ Wow! This is great!
